How to choose a tutor

Choose a right tutor

In some modules, you will have a number of tutorial classes to ballet for. Naturally, students select their classes based on their schedule, but that is often NOT THE SMARTEST CHOICE.
Instead, select the best tutor and attend his/her tutorial class.

A good tutor
  • Able to teach reasonably well
  • Covers the tutorial questions
  • Answers questions you have
  • Basically anything expected
In comparison, a great tutor
  • Is interesting
  • Covers the tutorial questions in half the class, teaches additional stuff in the 2nd half (which are often important concepts for exams)
  • Makes you think about what you have learnt by asking questions
  • Sends you additional resources like videos, powerpoint slides, templates, etc

How to select a great tutor

The very first thing you can do is ask your seniors. Those who have taken the module would have some impressions of their tutor. Seek out your seniors and compile all their opinions to make the best choice.

Secondly, google the tutor's name. Now I am not encouraging you to be too stalkerish here, but essentially is to check out the career background of the tutor, his/her experiences and previous networks. You might also be able to find reviews on the tutors or chance upon blogs commenting on their experience with the tutor. These information would give you a hint of how qualified the tutor is.

So remember, when there's the chance, choose your tutorial class based on the tutor, and not by your schedule!

How much money do I need for a one week visit to Singapore

Singapore City Scenery

Its going to be August soon, and a great time to start planning seriously for your year end vacation! and how do I know that? Because I have friends from different parts of the world asking about travelling in Singapore!  (Verzon spent one year in the States on exchange)

If you ask me, I think one week is a good time to completely experience Singapore. In fact, I think one week is on the high side, unless you wish to experience life on this sunny island. And the top concern is how much money should I bring to Singapore? Well, as a local, here are my estimates which tend to the higher side. It's better to play safe here as inflation seems to be more prominent recently...
All currencies are in SGD.

Budget for Basic Necessities

Food - A meal in the air-conditioned food court is around $5. A Macdonalds value meal is also around that price! - $15 per day
Drinks - Given the hot climate, you might want to get drinks during the day, which can cost up to $2 per bottle in the city. - $6 per day

Transport- Most Places are accessible by train and cost around $2 per trip. Assuming you go to 3 places a day , - $8 per day.
Cabs run by the meter, and starts from $3.20. You can calculate taxi fares here.

Accommodation - you can get a room around $60 per night for budget hotels further away from the city. The more reputable budget hotels are Fragrance and Hotel 81.

Thus for a 7D6N stay in Singapore i recommend at least $550- $650 for your basic necessities

Fun and More

And now to the things that matter. I mean, whats the meaning of a vacation if you do not enjoy right?? According to your fun appetite, set aside a reasonable amount of budget.

Alcohol - Alcohol is more expensive  in Singapore ( way too expensive IMO). A pint of Erdinger is around $12-14 in bars in clarke quay.

Casino - The few things that are free.. Locals have to pay $100 to enter though (to discourage gambling). For entering the Casino in Sentosa, you need to pay $3.50 for entry into Sentosa. (Another example of rising prices, used to be $3 not long ago)

Sentosa  - An island within our island dedicated for tourist attractions. Universal Studios Singapore is also here, with tickets at $68-$74 for a one day pass. You should be able to cover the entire USS in one full day. Besides the USS, there are also other attractions in sentosa that will require admission fees. For more details, click here.

Gardens by the Bay - Our proud $1 billion investment to inject greenery in the city. Some areas require a entry pass which costs $28.

Movies - Tickets are around $10 at local cinemas. Remember to book online to get good seats.

Clubbing - entry fee which comes with 1 free drink usually costs around $28-$32.

Tips for tourists on Saving money

Check out the local groupon deals one month before arriving. You could usually get cheap deals on good food, attractions and services.

If you are a nightclub goer, check out Hazel's guestlist. Get yourself on the list and enjoy free entry/ offers to the better clubs in Singapore. Ladies, you should always be clubbing for FREE.

If you are able to embrace the heat and culture of Singapore, have your meals in hawker centres. Food is cheapest there and is around $2.50. "Lao pa sat" looks like a hawker centre, but commands prices unworthy to be called a hawker centre.

Accommodation might be your biggest cost after nightlife. Save on your accommodation by couchsurfing or bunking with friends!

Shopping: For American brands like Coach, Abercrombie, CK,etc. You can get them for really much cheaper in the premium outlets store in the US. Really, they are overpriced here... For cheap and decent styles, head over to bugis village.

The ultimate guide to running longer and further

If you are looking for how to make yourself last longer, unfortunately, this only applies to running. How to run longer and further
Are you getting most of your running session? Do you hit your desired distance, timing and pace? Or are you always failing to hit your target?

I face the problem of always failing to run the distance I set for myself. I would give myself excuses like my heart can't take it, I'll run more tomorrow, etc. With such lame excuses, it was only natural that I begin to see my waistline expanding despite the fact that I was exercising. I got sick of this and decided that it's time for change.

It's been a while now, I wouldn't say I been successful all the time, but generally, I am getting a pretty good feeling after my run. Here are some tips to get the most out of it.

Plan Your Run

  • The most effective way is to make running your routine. Fix a certain timing for the few days a week that you will run, and never fail to make it, no matter how far you would go. If your run is in the evening, constantly remind yourself during the day that you have a run, and you are going to do it. The first step is always the hardest and this will inculcate a habit for running.

  • Target Distance: write down the distance you will cover this month, next month, 3 months later. Having a goal in mind would always be easier to achieve than having nothing at all.

  • Plan your route: instead of running a few rounds on the same route, plan a full loop for your route. Firstly, you are compelled to cover the whole distance as the only way to get home is to complete the run. Secondly, the it is mentally draining to run the same route over and over again, you will tend to stop at round 9 when you have to do 10 rounds.

Pre-Run:

  • No heavy meals 2 hours before, you want to prevent stitches.
  • Same logic here, refrain from drinking more than one mouth of water 2 hours before. I think it varies for the individual, but for my case more than one mouthful of water gives me stitches during the run.

During the run:

  • Get your Ipod loaded with your favourite songs
  • Tell yourself to think of other things
  • If you actually shout "I'm not giving up!" it works (trust me)
  • Picture your loved one/your reward at the finishing line

And at the end of the run, savour the feeling of accomplishment in completing your target distance. This will keep you running, keep you gunning for more.. Enjoy your run!

Inspirations from David Beckham

Inspirations from Beckham

Have you caught the video  where David Beckham surprised Adidas shoppers at their photobooth?

To say that the shoppers were shocked is an understatement. They were overwhelmed. Some cried, some were paralyzed in disbelief. Their responses were sincere and pure. To witness a global idol appear before their very eyes is utterly unbelievable.

That set me thinking. If you enjoy world-wide fame, your mere presence can bring such an emotional reaction from people. Your influence is far-reaching. You hold a power in your hands - a power to move people.

If you reach that level, what would you do? Would you be content with what you have, or would you strive for even more? Would you use this power to do good, or would you use this influence to spread evil?

David Beckham's simple visit touched the lives of some. At that level, one has the potential to touch so much more. At that level, the power of one can really make the world a better place.

Get famous, don't stop there, do good.

What are those letters after a name in a namecard

Letters after a name

If you started working, and you start to meet more people, chances are you will receive a number of namecards with some letters behind the name.

What are these letters?

They are known as post-nominal letters. They indicate the qualifications attained by the individual.
The ones you might be familar are Ph.D, which does not mean Permanent head damage, but rather Doctor of Philosophy. Similarly, MBA stands for Master of Business Administration.

Some examples of post-nominal letters in medicine

Just so happened that I met 2 clients from the realm of medicine. One of them is a very senior lecturer whom post-nominal letters look unfamiliar to me. I did some research and here's a compilation of letters more commonly seen in Singapore and what they stand for.

Name
Post-nominal
Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery
MBBS
Masters of Medicine
MMED
Doctor of Medicine
MD
Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians
FRACP
Fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore
FAMS
Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians
FRCP

It seems like there are a lot of medical organizations out there, so we can see doctors with letters starting with F, signifying that they are a fellow of the organization. This list is non-exhaustive.

Some examples of post-nominal letters in finance

And in a realm I am more familiar with. Again, the list is non-exhaustive
Name
Post-nominal
Certified Financial Planner
CFP
Chartered Financial Analyst
CFA
Certified Public Accountant
CPA

Feel Free to add more to the list!

I am tired and I need some motivation

Tired and need some motivation

I woke up in the morning today telling myself that I have to run when I got home from work.
When I was at work, I reminded myself that I would run when I got home from work.
To prepare for my run, I did not eat or drink 2 hours prior.
But when I got home, I was really, really tired.

If it sounds familiar to you, you should watch this clip for some motivation. I was really tired, but I am a champion. And champion lasts throughout.

Remember:
What the mind sets out to do the body will follow.
The first step is always the hardest.
Not tomorrow, but right now.

Now, go out for your run; Go do what you need to do; You are a champion.

Who invented the internet?

Who Invented the internet

Well this answer has a long history. But the definite answer is to NEVER claim you invented the internet, nor hint in anyway you created it, if you know what I mean.

The widely accepted version is that its hard to pinpoint who or which group invented the internet.

History of the internet

The initial idea came from Leonard Kleinrock. In 1961, he discussed the idea of packet switching which is key in internet in his paper on “Information Flow in Large Communication Nets”. Packet Switching is the idea that data can be transferred in packets through different pathways in a network to reach a destination, where the receiving computer will decipher the data.

In 1962, Joseph Carl Robnett Licklider had a vision of a world-wide computer network which is the internet we see today.

These ideas gave birth to the early version of the internet, the ARPANET. The ARPANET is short for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. The ARPANET was developed over the 1960s to support computers of different operating systems in a network. The initial members of the network were University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), The Stanford Research Institute's Augmentation Research CenterUniversity of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and The University of Utah's Computer Science Department. Interestingly the first message sent across was "lo". The intended message was login, but the system failed before it could send the full word.

Thereafter, a number of similar networks were developed around the world. There was a need for connect and unify these networks. To achieve this, a common language of transmission was developed, which we know as the TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and IP (Internet Protocol). Credit for the development o protocols is mainly conferred to Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf.

TCP/IP became the only approved protocol on the ARPANET, standardized, and over time the network of connected TCP/IP networks grew to become the internet. Internet became widely popular with the release of the Mosaic web browser in 1993.

How much money to give at a Malay Wedding

Red packet to give at Malay Wedding

This Sunday, I’ll be attending my JC best buddy’s wedding. This is the first wedding invitation I received from friends of my age, and this will also be my life’s first malay wedding. Now after looking at the invitation, I immediately had 2 concerns I hadn’t thought about it before

1)      How much red packet do I need to pay?

2)      The time states 11am-5pm, Must I be there for the entire duration?

I believe these couple of concerns would be echoed by many, so I’m here to share my “research” (trust me, I’m an engineer)

How much red packet do I need to pay?
When it comes to money, it’s always a sensitive issue. There is always the balance between the tight budget constraints of a student and not wanting to give too little and embarrass yourself. However after reading the forum and asking my malay friends, I begin to realize money shouldn’t be the issue for a Malay wedding in the first place.
Culturally for Chinese weddings, the dinner is held in posh hotels/restaurants and it is good manners to give more than the cost of the table. Interestingly, the first thing is to register at the reception where there will be people to guide you. At the same time, they will collect your red packet and record your name on the red packet. This naturally is about the amount you are giving, as it will become a “face” issue.
For a malay wedding, it is culturally different, the size of the red packet does not matter. The bride and groom are less particular about money, but more interested in seeing you turn up for the occasion, as your presence is very much appreciated by them.
It seems like a $20 red packet will do. For my best buddy, I’m giving him a $50.

Must I be there for the entire duration?
I would recommend to check with your friend(the bride/groom) and see what time to turn up. For my case, even though the invitation writes 11am-5pm, my friend asked me to come only after 2.45pm. So, no harm checking first!

Hope this helps guys!

Wisdoms of Stephen Covey

On this day, although Stephen Covey has left this world, he is no doubt an inspiring figure for me and many others. He will continue to live in my heart through his motivational book - 7 habits of highly effective people. I went through a quick video of him speaking on youtube and his most impactful wisdom to me was:

Everyone chooses one of two roads in life. One road is the broad, well travelled road to mediocrity. The other is the road to greatness.

For those on the second road, you might be scared, you might fail, but it would be a decision that you would not regret. At the end of the road, you will find a sense of achievement, for you have done it and walk the path till the end. If you ever feel like giving up, remember - persistence is the key to success.

Unfortunately, the video does not touch on the 7 habits, which as a recap I have listed below:
  1. Be Proactive
  2. Begin with the End in Mind
  3. Put First Things First
  4. Think Win-Win
  5. Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
  6. Synergize
  7. Sharpen the Saw

How to stop unwanted calls

Stop Nuisance Calls

[Update on December 2013: Good news for Singaporeans wanting to block and avoid telemarketing calls! From 2 December 2013, you can register online at www.dnc.gov.sg to opt out from unsolicited phone calls. I guess this will finally put a stop to those calls and messages that do not go away despite countless times of unsubscribing from them!]

A call comes in, the caller ID indicates an unknown number. Do you pick it up? Sometimes, i'll get some undesirable calls which I instantly regretted picking up. They come in these forms:
  1. Marketing"Hello, I am from xxxx bank..."
  2. Unfriendly calls"&$@% ..."
  3. Silent calls"..." (Where there is no sound and perhaps someone called you by accident)
So.. I did some research on how to stop such calls, and here are 3 ideas on how to stop these unwanted calls:

1. Prevention
Excuse the cliche, but prevention is better than cure. To avoid getting marketing calls, be careful when you give out your number to companies, who typically require you to provide your number from lucky draws, promotions, etc.

2. Opt out
In some countries, you can indicate to not receive such unsolicited calls by registering with the telephone preference service. It would be illegal for marketing companies to call you if you opt out.
Remember, these services should not require you to pay.

3. Change your number
In those countries where such services are not available ( like singapore), there are few things you can do.  Get equipped with a caller id, so you can identify unknown numbers and ignore them. Telemarketers usually move on to the next person on their list and would not call again. If all else fails, request a change of number from your service provider.

Trivia: World Oldest Dog living now is 25

World Oldest Dog

Did you know that 1 human year is equivalent to 7 dog years? However, that is just a popular belief and has nothing scientific behind it, so just take it with a pinch of salt! It is believed that the lifespan of a dog is about 1/7 of a human's.

Anyway, my friend has a terrier about 15 years old, limping , deaf but otherwise healthy. We were very impressed that it could live up to this age, as this was the first time we heard of a dog living more than 10 years. Then the natural question came - how long can dogs live?

The oldest dog of all-time is Bluey with an age of 29. We also have Pusuke but sadly, died in 2011 at the age of 26. The current oldest living dog is reckoned to be Pip at the age of 25 (at time of writing) , however her owner does not have her birth certificate to prove it... bummer

Motivational Running Video on Steve Jones

The youtube is actually a trove of inspirations and motivational videos. Today I came across a  video of a marathon runner - Steve Jones. Watch this for your daily dose of inspiration, especially before starting your running regime.

Three things that struck me in this video:
1. Fence-Sitting Commentary. The commentary really reflects the critics of life. When you run too fast, you will have all the critics telling you that you are growing too fast - its unsustainable, you are bound to fall, competition will catchup, etc. Don't let that get to you. The only way, like what Jones did, is to shut them up by winning. Towards the end, the commentary was full of praise for Jones.

It doesn't matter what people are saying about you, just remember that you know what you are doing and persist to win at the finishing line.

2. Great music. Never underestimate the power of music! I remember I've seen a video somewhere of this guy, who is normally inactive, brought alive by music. I have a playlist that I use for my jogging/workouts. I find music effective in maintaining my pace during running, and fast beats spurs me to run faster.  The track from the video was pretty sensational.

3. Persistence. Steve Jones is the type that would never give up. In his marathon in 1986 he hit a wall in the final six miles but still persist to the finishing line. It is probably his strong spirit that gave him the final burst as seen from the video.

Topics to talk about to avoid the awkward silence

Topics to talk

You and a colleague are taking a cab to your client's office. After a 5 minute conversation, both of you realize you have nothing else to talk about. ~silence~

You are eating lunch with your boss. After discussing the issues on hand, both of you start to look down and all you can hear is the sound of your boss and you chewing the food.......

You met this really cute girl at the party. After a few hours you finally got your chance to talk to her. Your first sentence was awesome, you made her laugh, and then.... ~silence~

There are just so many situations that having a topic on hand would be useful to avoid that sticky situation. Here I would share some ideas on what you could talk about with a not-so-close person,

General Topics to talk about
Home: Where do you stay?
Family: Are you the middle child?
Situation and surroundings : I like this hawker centre!
Weather - OMG, its hot~
Sports - so what sports do you play?
Compliments : I like your shoes, where did you buy it?
Life: How's work?
Current news: Did you read about how ronaldinho lost his coke deal?
Food : Oh have you tried the new ice cream?
Tech gadgets : Heard of the new google I/O?

If the partner is a foreigner, you can additionally talk about:
Experience in this country: Is it your first time here? Have you been to see the merlion yet?
Experience in home country: How's it like back home? Do you like it better here or there?

Finally, I would urge you that the best way is to accept the silence. Do you feel uncomfortable if you and your partner don't talk for a while? The real breakthrough in a relationship is not when you have enough topics to break the awkward silence, but rather both of you feel comfortable around each other even when none of you are talking. In other words, both of you are just simply enjoying each other's presence.

What's inside a coffee machine? and trivia from the technician

Ever wondered whats inside that coffee spewing machine? Press a button, and after some mechanical sounds you'll see coffee magically dripping into your cup. Today I was in luck when a technician showed me the insides of a coffee machine (those bigger kinds):

Coffee Machine Inside 1
Behind the digital display
Coffee Machine Inside 2
Inside the coffee Machine
Coffee Machine Inside 3
From Left to right: Coffee beans, creamer, cocoa, sugar
-----------
Do check out my new post on what's inside a vending machine? and other trivia
-----------

It was... an eye opener. I was happily fascinated... until  the technician told me something that shocked me. "The jia lat (singlish for bad) part is the boiler where all the hot water is stored". and I asked why.

I am not sure how true are his words, but he mentioned the hot water has all those metal precipitate suspending in the water due to the hot boiling temperature. But apparently, no one has any problems after drinking it...

Subsequently I ask my friends and they told me: oh you didn't know? OF COURSE I DIDNT KNOW! I happily take a double dose of mocha EVERYDAY!! omg.. what have I been drinking?

Some of them told me that they've seen ants in the sugar capsule, and that is why they do not really drink from the coffee machine.

And finally the technician added: If you see those hot water dispenser in the outdoors, don't bother drinking from it. They are infested with insects. and among the insects he's seen, includes a cockroach..

That's it, no more drinking from hot drinks/water dispensers outdoors for me again...

How to kill Mosquitos absolutely free

Kill mosquitos free

I live on a tropical island where the climate is optimal for Mosquitos to breed. I don't really mind giving some of my blood to them, but it can get really frustrating when mosquito bites wake you up in the middle of the sleep. For those of you who faces the same problem of mosquito bite at night, (not to promote any violence or cruelty. but) here's how I hunt Mosquitos when sleeping:

1. At the first sign of a mosquito bite, you're awoken, you're pissed. Switch on the light as fast as possible with minimal movement.

2. Go back to the area near your bed and scan the walls/ furniture for the mosquito.
Tip: you can easily spot them against the lighter background. They usually park anywhere after a good meal. Some of the places I found them include: on the white wall, on my blanket, on my jeans, near the side of my bed.

3. You must hit it with a fast and furious strike, and get ready to follow up with 2nd or 3rd strikes if you miss.
Tip: it is best to use a newspaper to swat it against the wall.

4. Now that you're done, go back and enjoy your sleep.

List of bank abbreviations in Singapore

Acronyms for Singapore Banks

My friend asked me today - What does D in DBS stand for? For a moment, I was stunned..
'Hmm Domestic? ' But that doesn't sound right. Fortunately I recalled a story on Singapore's history and figured out the D stands for Development.

This thus spurred my inspiration to come up with a post to list down all the acronyms of some of the more common banks in Singapore and what they stand for.

DBS - Development Bank of Singapore
HSBC - Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation
OCBC - Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation
OUB - Overseas Union Bank
POSB - Post Office Savings Bank
SCB - Standard Chartered Bank
UOB - United Overseas Bank

As a Singaporean, you should also know that we have three made-in-singapore banks listed on the local stock exchange - DBS, OCBC and UOB.

[More to add to the list? Feel free to add in the comments section]

Persistence is the secret to success - Life tip from Robert Greenberg

Life tip: Persistence

Just do it. Never give up.

For my friends out there who are currently hesitating, or are thinking of giving up, remember that persistence is key. If you drop the effort without persevering until you see the results, everything will go to waste.  The logic to success is simple - just do it and never give up!

With that, I will end this post with a motivational clip featuring CEO of Skechers, Robert Greenberg. Great speech.

"Persistence, true persistence"

3 Life Tips from Will Smith

Will Smith motivational

We know him as the Fresh Prince of Bel Air, but few know of his deep side. I just watched a 10 min compilation of Will Smith's words of success and they could be basically summarised into 3 points:

1. "Don't ever let somebody tell you you can't do something"

This is the famous line from the movie pursuit of happiness. Many times we try to do things but some people will tell you that its impossible, do not be discouraged. You have to believe it can be done.

2. No shortcut to success

Talents are inborn and skills comes with relentless practice. When your friends are partying, you practice, and you improve your skills. Will's success lies on his "ridiculous, sickening work ethic".

3. Live to make a difference

I personally like this - Make someone else's life better, and your life will be better too.
