What to do if you picked up a small bird

I picked up a cute little bird the other day. It was limping on the road side and fortunately, the road has little traffic passing through.

I had the immediate intention of nursing it back to health, but realise I did not know what to do. Thanks to google, I got some answers. Interestingly, the first responses were do not try to keep it.

Not wanting to endanger this cute little fledgling's life, I went back to the spot where I found it. True enough, on a nearby tree I could spot a nest and a bird nearby chirping ( I think it's the mom, as the fledgling chirped along as well.

It was a challenge trying to climb the tree, but as I climbed the little bird chirped more actively. The mother bird watched from a safe distance, but clearly she was keeping a watchful eye as I placed carefully the little bird back to the nest.
It was a heartwarming scene as I walked away and saw the fledgling reunited with the mother bird.

If it happens to you, this are the tips I gathered. Should you encounter a similar situation, hope that it will be useful for you.

Do
  • Try to find its nest and put it back
  • It will chirp and its parents should be able to hear and find it back.

Do not
  • try to keep it
  • feed it with food or water
You never know when you might need this.
This was a totally random and pleasant experience for me...

The difference between a shawl and scarf

Scarf and Shawl difference

Do you know the difference between a shawl and scarf?

Its christmas season and the scarf is one of the common candidates as a christmas gift. It was only when my friend said, "I wanted a shawl, not a scarf!" before I realize that there is a difference between the two of them.

The main difference lies in its Size.

A shawl is larger than a scarf - this difference is size is attributed to the body part the said accessory is used to wrap around.

Typically, you would be more familiar with a scarf that wraps around your neck (and sometimes the head). For a shawl, you can wrap it around your neck and shoulders (Though there is no hard rule you can't wrap it around the head). With that, you can expect that the shawl is often longer and broader than the scarf.

Hence, in the future, do take note that there's a key difference between getting a scarf and a shawl!

You asked, we answered! Hope this was useful for you.

85k pageviews milestone for Eufass and future direction

Thank you readers, as today I officially hit 85k pageviews.

******************Update Mar 2016: I have hit 100k pageviews!! ****************

With a steady flow of hundreds of readers coming in to EUFASS everyday to read about tips and trivia, I think it is time for EUFASS to grow and evolve to provide readers with something more.
And I would like to share EUFASS with similar people like me out there.

The Long Version (You can find a summary on the right bar under "about me" )

I have been blogging on travel tips and trivia for 5 years and this blog consistently rake up hundreds of viewerships per day.

I started this blog because I enjoy sharing what I have learnt and thought it may be useful knowledge to people out there as well. Turns out that what is useful that I can share on my limited capacity are mainly travel tips and general trivia, and I have achieved some success in getting substantial readership for posts such as  sheep and travel. (These topics are reflective of what the blog is trying to capture - Frequently asked questions and useful knowledge)

Today while writing on another travel tip on my recent family trip to Japan, I had an epiphany - if I could see and share information that is not properly explained out there on the internet, I believe each and everyone of you out there will have something to share too, that would be useful to everyone. In the spirit of EUFASS, I aim to tap on not just my lessons but lessons from everyone of you out there. So if you have learnt something here, share something here as well.

As you see, my current frequency of blogging is weekly(by far the best), not because I am lazy, but I do not come across quality tips so often. Your contribution will be greatly valued, to help me build EUFASS into a vault of useful knowledge to share with the world, so go ahead and leave your tip on the comments box below.( if you wish to contribute a blog post - leave a comment).

How is this site different from tripadvisor?
EUFASS is more than just travel tips. Travel seems to be the main focus as this is something people can easily tap on their recent travel experience and domestic knowledge to share.
The content will be curated and summarised by me so that readers can prioritise their reading to get the most useful tips. I aim to build a knowledge vault that readers can come back frequently to quench their thirst for knowledge.

How is this site different from wikipedia?

Wikipedia feels like you are reading the dictionary, is not interactive and there definitely are more enjoyable and succinct ways to acquire knowledge.
( but I still love wikipedia)

Thank you once again readers, and hope you give me a like and continue to support the sharing of tips and trivia through EUFASS!

SG50 National day special: 8 Beautiful Singapore stories that made me smile Part 2

SG50 Singapore beautiful stories

Last year, I blogged about a collection of positive Singapore stories as part of national day celebration for Singapore 49th birthday.

This year, I decided to make a compilation of the beautiful stories that I can recollect over the year. My mood is immediately uplifted as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary with a special public holiday that stretch our long weekend to a total of 4 days (Rejoice!)

1) Singaporeans heroes defending our local children

Super heros exist not only in Marvel comics, but in Singapore too. Our hero that defended us Singaporeans from external forces - It does not matter that the opponent is bigger sized than him, Elfy stood up against a caucasian man verbally abusing one of our own in the MRT. You are the man Elfy!

2) Passionate MRT drivers that brings a smile to your day

An SMRT driver made a cheery commentary instead of the usual monotonic routine announcements. Lets temporarily forget about all the breakdowns!

3) Singaporeans that do not condone fraudulent behaviours

Remember the Vietnamese tourist who got cheated at Sim Lim? I thought it was pretty sweet that we crowdfunded more than US$10,000, and even made sure the scammer got what he deserves. I feel even safer in Singapore now.

4) Singaporeans making the days of the others - Spare coins at vending machine

I've seen this in the US, some spare change would really be nice especially when you need them!

5) Singaporean taxi drivers that cares

Life may be hard but it is harder to lose your stuff in our taxis: A taxi-driver knocked on 20 doors in a condo to find the owner of a bag left in his cab.

6) Empathetic Doctors in our hospitals

Doctors from Thomson Medical Centre waived charges for an expecting lady coping with an unexpected departure of her husband.

7) Singaporeans that turns a shitty day around

The biggest MRT breakdown in Singapore's history saw 2 major lines out of power while Singaporeans scrambled to get home  after a long days work. Our kind Singapore Samaritans stepped up to offer free rides and refreshments for those inconvenienced. Give these guys a beer!

Read More here

Oh, our ERP doesnt breakdown, I guess that can count as something positive as well.

8) Singaporeans display the power of masses by breaking crimes through social media

Social media is not just where we enjoy SGAG and SMRT feedback. In an unbelievable case, a Singapore car stolen in Malaysia was tracked down by the social network of SG and MS netizens. This is so impressive and touched me on how we look out for each other even in the smallest ways. Keep it up guys!

IF this doesnt bring up your SG50 mood, I don't know what else does. Singaporeans, you rock! Happy 50th birthday Singapore!~

Singapore Dry spell and 4 water-saving buildings

Singapore dry spell

The dry spell has been persisting since February, though I did notice a trace of drizzle for a few minutes in Tampines today. To deal with the ongoing dry weather, I saw on the news that contingency plans to step up desalination and NEWater production is already in place. Compared to challenging times where water rationing is needed, our lives are just a little bit inconvenienced by the scorching weather.

This thought triggers the realization that we Singaporeans are actually quite complacent and that there will always be enough water supply for the citizens. There was some talk about the possibility of water rationing last year, but I believe no one would have imagined that really happening. The level of confidence we have in our water security is ironically, worrying.

Given our climate, we can be sure that dry spells recur every year. However, exercises to urge citizens to take ownership on water conservation have been largely unsuccessful. Yet this problem has to be addressed and it seems that one of the solutions is to have sustainable green architecture with water-saving features.

Let’s look at some of these examples:

Jem Retail Mall

Jem is the first mixed use development in Singapore to achieve BCA’s Green Mark Platinum Version 4.0 award, the highest certification for sustainable buildings..

Some of the water saving features include a
  • Rainwater harvesting system
  • Condensate water collection

Water Savings: Estimated 265,160 m3/year  (~1000 times of an Olympic size swimming pool (250m3))

PARKROYAL on Pickering

PARKROYAL on Pickering is situated in the heart of Raffles place and has a distinct nature lanscape amidst its architecture.

Some of the water saving features include a
  • Rainwater harvesting and use of NEWater,
  • Water efficient fittings
  • Automatic sensors to regulate water usage

Water Savings: Estimated 6,900 m3 /year

W Singapore – Sentosa Cove

Been here for a friend's wedding once, it feels like you never stepped out of nature.

Some of the water saving features include
  • Water efficient fittings
  • Rainwater harvesting system to collect rainwater for irrigation and nonpotable use
  • Condensate water collection

Water Savings: Estimated 22,200 m³/year

Solaris

Tucked in a corner of One-North business district, Solaris is a two-tower building with innovative green furnishments.

Some of the water saving features include
  • Eco-cell and rainwater harvesting via a network of siphonic drainage systems

As mentioned on this year’s Budget, “sustainable urban solutions” is one of the 5 growth areas. I believe we will see more of such green buildings in the near future.

Other interesting trivia on Singapore’s dry spell

  • Singapore is 140km north of the equator and will encounter dry weather in February due to shifting of the monsoon season.
  • The record so far of the dry spell is set in 2014 where minimal rain was recorded for 27 days. The previous record was an 18-day dry spell in 2008. If no rain is to persist this month, there is possibility of setting a new record.
  • Though dry months are typically January to March, May and June are the hottest months of the year. Singapore's hottest temperature recorded was in March 1998, when the highest temperature was 36 degrees Celsius.

Hope that this post will spark your appreciation for the water conservation efforts taking place behind the scenes, and do your part to save water!

How much red packet money to give for baby shower?

It is common for new parents to hold a baby shower celebration to commemorate the first month of their newborn. In my opinion, the full month celebration for the infant is not just an occasion for parents to share their fruit of their labour, after arduous months of carrying and delivering the baby, but it is also a good reason for friends and family to get together and be part of the new little life.

I was recently invited for a baby shower of a colleague. It is a blessing to be part of his baby shower celebration and it was enjoyable to see and play with the cute 1st-month baby! However, this question came to my mind like all my previous other red packet questions –

How much angpao money should I give to my baby/infant full month?

There are elements of similarity with red packets for weddings in this question, and I would say it would depend on:
  • The type of event ( Can range from house visit to lavish hotel setting)
  • Relationship with the couple

Typically baby showers are held at the couple’s house or a function room of a condo.

$50 seemed like a rate that I would give an ok friend. A simple $50 note is polite, but I personally find that you can go an extra mile to show that you care. For example, you can augment your red packet amount with auspicious numbers like $68, $88.

For close friends and relatives, I would go with $168. It bodes well as it sounds similar to 一路發, which means earning big money throughout the baby’s life journey.

If you feel like giving more, by all means! More is always better than less, especially for the couple as it can help defray some of the exorbitant expenses needed to raise the baby.

Hope this was useful for you

How much ang pao money to give at Indian wedding

Indian Wedding Red packet money

Attending Indian weddings is not an everyday event for me, and I was pleasantly surprised to be invited by my colleague. While it was exciting to witness an Indian wedding, the natural question which I had previously for my friend's wedding in JB, as well as for my friend's Malay wedding, came into mind.

How much red packet money should i pack for an Indian wedding?

A little background: His event was held at Arena Country Club while food served was buffet style.

Seeking the answer

As usual, I poked my nose around and even asked the groom post-event. I came to understand that giving ang pao money for a wedding is primarily very much a Chinese custom. In Indian culture, the expectation of the wedding couple is to gather everyone for this joyous occasion, and typically no ang pao money will be expected.

However in Singapore, due to influence from Chinese counterparts or for some reason, friends and relatives do give a token sum to cover the cost of venue and food.

Eventually I went ahead with a red packet of $50 for the new couple. And as I always say, consider not only the cost but also the level of friendship you and the groom/bride share!

Some other notes

  • I was intrigued by the wedding rituals that the couple did and wondered what they signify. Guess what, my friend told me he did not know either. He just followed the instructions
  • I must say the food spread was awesome and delicious. I came to know that they catered from Riverwalk Tandoori. 10/10 would recommend.

Hope this was useful for you

Why is the ocean blue/green?

Depending on where you are, the ocean/sea/pond/pool of water can be a beautiful clear blue.

While in some instances, it is green in colour.

This simple question came up in a middle while out with friends in the zoo today. I vaguely remembered this being covered in primary/secondary school science, but thought it was a good time for a refresher.

Why is the ocean blue in some places and green in some other?

Hint: wavelengths.

The ocean is blue because water absorbs the wavelengths of other colours and reflect only blue wavelengths into our eyes.

The ocean is green in some places due to the presence of algae and plant life, which reflect green wavelengths into our eyes.

Just a small refresher tidbit from middle school if you have forgotten!

How to type symbols with Alt key

ALT symbols

Did you know By using [alt] and certain key combinations, you can actually create symbols from the fundamental keyboard?

I believe most of you would have some extent of understanding on this, but what you need to know is how and what types of symbols are out there. Extremely useful for a final year engineering student rushing his thesis...

The How

While holding down the Alt key, input numbers on the keypad (Only the numbers on the keypad will work) When you finish entering the numbers, release the Alt key and the symbol will appear.

For laptops, you will have to activate the num lock key function and use the keypad numbers .

The What

Search for the character map utility on your windows to see the full possible list of symbols (Check out different fonts like Wingdings for more variety)

Symbols which can be typed out will have its alt key combination on the bottom right as shown below:

World Cup 2014: Germany beats Argentina to win the World Cup, creates history

64 matches, 32 Countries, 1 World Cup trophy.

The 2014 World Cup has finally concluded, with a stroke of brilliance by Mario Gotze that earned Germany their 4th World Cup Title.

120 mins Match Review

The Germans were playing at their usual style of short passes and had several chances in the box, but no shots managed to trouble Romero. Joachim Low made a substitution which was a rewarding move as Gotze scored the winner.

Argentina produced a few brilliant long balls that put their forwards in one-on-one situations, but both Higuain and Palacio were unable to convert.

Both sides fronted a solid defence in which Messi and Mueller had both chances. Messi is always guarded by at least 3 men, a heuristic which Germany strongly adhered to keep Messi at bay.

As the game proceeded further into extra time, tensions rose as the match saw blood after a nasty 'accidental' fist from Aguero landed on Schwensteinger. Time stopped in the 122nd minute when Messi stepped up to take the free kick. If he scored, he would probably havebeen the

Best performers

Neuer for Germany, for his visionary judgment portrayed in running out of the goal for some magnificent saves.

Mascherano for Argentina, for his threatening long balls while contributing substantially to defence.

History was made.

  • This is Germany's 4th World Cup title and a good 24 years has passed since their last title.
  • Germany becomes the first European team to win the World Cup in South America.
  • Mario Gotze's name will go in history for being the first substitute to score the only goal in a world cup final.
  • 36-year old Miroslav Klose not only broke the all time goal scoring record for one single player at the World Cup, and is also the first man to appear in 4 World Cup finals.

World Cup Trivia: Semifinals key stats and stadiums

World Cup Semifinals

This World Cup Semifinals we see 2 from South America and 2 from Europe. It will no doubt be a South America vs Europe showdown as we have Brazil vs Germany in the first set and Argentina vs Netherlands in the second.

Some Trivia

From the first World Cup in 1990, It has always been the South Americans taking the World Cup Trophy when it is hosted in the Americana. By this logic, the odds are low for Germany and Netherlands.

There were 4 times in World Cup history that only one continent was left in the Semifinals, and they were all teams from Europe.
1934: Italy, Austria, Czechoslovakia and Germany.
1966: West Germany, Soviet Union (Former Russia), England and Portugal.
1982: Italy, West Germany, Poland and France
2006: Italy, France, Germany and Portugal

The Big matches ahead:

08 Jul 2014 - 17:00 Local time

Brazil and Germany will play at Estadio Mineirao(stadium name), Belo Horizonte(city)
  • Estadio Mineirao (Stadium Mineirao) was coined by the governor of Minai Gerais and Mineiraos means someone born in Minai Gerais
  • Constructed in 1965
  • Overall capacity of 58170

In the previous clashes, Brazil managed 12 wins 5 draw 4 losses against Germany
Brazil scored 63 goals vs Germany's 39 goals

09 Jul 2014 - 17:00 Local time

Argentina and Netherlands will play at Arena Corinthians(stadium name), Sao Paulo(city).
  • Arena Corinthians, also known as Arena de Sao Paulo, is the stadium for Sao Paulo's home club, Corinthians.
  • Constructed in 2014
  • Overall capacity 62601

Suprisingly, Netherlands has the better record of 4 wins 3 draw 1 loss against Argentina.
Netherlands scored 13 goals vs Argentina's 6 goals

Statistics never lie. But the truth is: STATS DON'T MATTER. Cheers to an exciting World Cup, enjoy while it lasts!

World Cup 2014: Argentina vs Netherlands Semifinals Prediction

World Cup Semifinals
3 out of 4 teams predicted overall!

100% accuracy prediction recorded for both of yesterday’s quarterfinal matches!

Argentina Vs Belgium review

An early goal from Higuain sealed the match for Argentina, bringing the La Albiceleste into the semifinals for the first time since 1990. The mere one-goal margin does not do justice to the sublime play by the Argentines. The following scenes were still etched in my mind, Di Maria’s skilful ball juggle, Messi’s defence-splitting through passes as well as Higuain’s electrifying run that finished with a shot that shaved off the crossbar.
Oh and of course, the most hilarious scene award goes to coach Alejandro Sabella's fall to the ground after witnessing Higuain’s close shot.
Another 1-0 score like France vs Germany, but...
Same scoreline as France vs Germany, yet the Argentines delivered a more beautiful play of football. They held the possession well with threatening passes and held the Belgians at bay with the likes of Messi at the front. Placing any number less than 3 defenders against Messi will be suicidal.

Holland Vs Costa Rica review

I have secretly hoped for Costa Rica to win. Not even the ultra strike force trio of Van Persie, Sneijder and Robben manage to find the back of the net throughout the 120mins of play, which speaks volume of the strength of Costa Rica’s defence. Despite the loss, I believe the Los Ticos will return as heroes, after all they are the first Central American country that made it so far.
My only grievance for Netherlands was the waste of their plentiful attacking chances. Netherlands would definitely need to better their goal conversion to beat Argentina.

Argentina Vs Holland Statistic analysis and Prediction

For the next match, Argentina will unfortunately be missing Di Maria, who is another fearsome figure in the midfield that causes panic among his opponents with his lightning pace and superb ball-handling. (Yes, they still have Messi though)

Netherlands on the other hand, looks set to take their first world cup, but not before defeating Argentina. Argentina has never lost in the semifinals before. The difference for the Oranje, is the presence of a visionary coach, Van Der Gaal, whose move to substitute the first team keeper at the final minute proved effective.

Both teams are strong, but Netherlands has to go. Historically the host continent will take the World Cup. What is more exciting than a Brazil vs Argentina final  for 2014 World Cup? Probably if Brazil still had Neymar, it would have been the perfect match of the tournament.

Who will qualify for the finals?

World Cup Trivia: Semifinals Prediction Brazil vs Germany

Semifinals Prediction Brazil vs Germany
Brazil vs Germany

It was an eventful day where both Germany and Brazil outclassed their opponents. Germany, held their defense rock solid amidst France efforts to level the score; Brazil, on the other hand, constantly put the Colombians on the edge of their toes.

(Do watch the stunning free kick by David Luiz if you haven't. Definitely worth your time to catch.)

My prediction on these 2 quarterfinal matches was 50% accurate. Regardless, this is a set up for an EPIC match where the favourites both enter to the next round and face each other. Who will win in this semifinal match? Let's see what has changed...

Developments for the Brazil team since quarterfinals

Star striker Neymar is out of the World cup due to a broken vertebrae.

Why is he important? If you look at the goals scored, chances created, shots on goal, as well as attacking touches, the 22 year old soccer prodigy ranks first among his team. Though he did not score in the colombia match, he was the clear threat which drew quite a few defenders to allow other players to find the net.

Why this may not be important? With the depth of the Brazilian team, they are still indubitably a force to be reckon with Hulk as the main striker.

Captain and central defender Thiago Silva will also be out due to second yellow card

Now with one key player out, Brazil might be able to manage. With their captain and heart of the defence out as well, Coach Scolari will need to think of a strategy to fortify the team's defence.

Developments for the German team since quarterfinals

Nothing much but good news for the Germans.

With this victory over France, Germany gains a new accolade of being the first nation to reach FOUR consecutive World Cup semifinals.

Win at all costs
This match against France saw the Germans scaling back their attacks after their first goal in the 15th minute. It was agonizing to watch as they disrupted France's attacks, held possession and executed strategic fouls to slow down the opponent's pace. Yet, they are unlike the 100% defensive style of Greece, as they can capitalize on defence gaps with their efficient strikers when the opportunity arises.

Key man to watch
Defender: David Luiz
(Strong in defence yet a clear threat in his shots. Reminds me of Roberto Carlos)
Keeper: Manuel Neuer (Splendid reflexes against France)

Efficient attacking force:
Thomas Mueller, Mesut Ozil, Mario Goetze

Prediction: The pick is hard on this one.

I would still go with Brazil to extend their record win of 5 world cups. I am rooting for Brazil as their dynamic, fast-paced style of football is not something Germany's efficient, mechanical soccer style can manage.
